Money and Family

I've got a question for you

How do you feel about money and family? Specifically loaning money to a family member whose in a rough place or situation? It's a tricky thing......loaning money to family.

It makes me feel bad to say no to someone if I'm in the position to help. Especially since I'm trying so hard to focus on people in need this Christmas, like collecting food for the local food panties. Doesn't it make sense to help your family if your willing to help strangers? It's just something I'm battling with and I wondered how you all feel about it?

An adult in my family today asked if they could borrow a $100 from my husband and I and they would give it back by tomorrow when they get their paycheck. That wouldn't seem so bad, but it's just not the first time they've asked and sometimes they say they will pay back but then they don't. So how does one handle a situation like this. You don't want to leave a person you love in a bad position if you can help them, but then you don't want to lose money like that either, especially when my husband and I just bought a house.

So I ended up running to the bank and withdrawing money. I just know what the Bible says about helping those in need, and how you shouldn't turn your back on people in need, so how can I say no? My husband was amazing today to let us loan money if I decided we should. I'm so grateful for my husband.

Anyway, I know this isn't fashion related, but I would be interested in what you think.
And I hope you all are having a good day!

I don't think I'd be able to say no to a family member if they asked for money, especially if I am in a position to really help them out. If I ever do lend to family, unless its a lot of money, I don't think I'd expect them to pay me back. My aunt once owed my dad a lot of money, and she never gave it. Instead of fighting with her, my dad chose to let her off...

yeah, thaht is really awkward, I have a friend who often goes out to lunch or dinner with us adn "forgets" to bring money, and then never pays us back later. It's not even as much money as you are talking about... but you do begin to feel a little taken advantage of.

Actually I heard a financial advisor say that you should never loan money to family, instead you should give them what you feel you can without the expectation to return it. otherwise like you said it becomes very awkward if they don't pay it back on time xoxoxo

Hmm, very tricky! I would consider loaning to my immediate family, because I know they will pay me back. I think it's really kind of you and your husband to loan even after they've not repaid you a couple of times. And I think it's great what Heather said above, if you have the money to spare, give it without expecting it back. I'll have to take note of the advice:)

Oye, that is definitely a tough sitch!! I agree with Sher, that is so so kind of you and your husband. I don't know how I'd be able to do it!

I think it's wonderful for you both to display such generosity - especially at this time of year. Good karma is most definitely coming your way, Tasha! :)

Its that time of year when you feel really moved to do stuff like that, too. I'm glad you posted about it. Very cool blog!

yeah. that's a hard one... I'm like you, loaning even though I might not get paid back. I always want to help, but it still doesn't give people the right to take advantage... :)

i know how it feels. when somebody says they're going to pay you back but then they won't. i guess, there's a limit into this pattern. sometimes, people - family members or not - behave this way if they're tolerated. however, should you think that the help they ask is really a bad need, then God will just bless you back. you and your husband are very kind hearted.

hmmm... I kinda think that since it's family. It's ok to loan money because you know they will give it back!

it's difficult, but I'm a believer of you should only lend money and things that you don't mind not getting back, if you care about the person it shouldn't matter. perhaps offer them round for meals instead if they've got a bad reputation.

it does depend what the money is going on- if towards rent, needs and foods not so bad, but if they eat out, smoke and live generally quite frivalously, they could probably do with managing their money better
